Lawless debuted in first place on Wednesday with an opening day take of $1.14 million. That was enough to outpace Lionsgate's The Expendables 2 by $73,891 for the day. The Weinstein Company release starring Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy was off to a solid start for a film opening the Wednesday before Labor Day Weekend. In comparison, 2010's The American grossed $1.67 million on opening day, while last year's The Debt opened with $0.97 million. While Lawless is likely to be more front-loaded in its initial days of release than The Debt was, it is also likely to be less front-loaded than The American was. With that in mind, Lawless could be looking at a four-day weekend gross somewhere in the area of $11.5 million to $14.0 million and a six-day start in the range of $13.5 million to $16.3 million.
As mentioned, The Expendables 2 finished in a close second with $1.06 million. The ensemble action sequel fell 35 percent from Tuesday and 51 percent from last Wednesday. Wednesday declines were especially sharp across the board yesterday, as Lawless entering the marketplace, the nearing end of the summer box office season, Hurricane Isaac and the Republican National Convention all had an added effect on holdovers. The Expendables 2 has grossed $56.31 million in 13 days, placing it 21 percent behind the $71.03 million 13-day take of 2010's The Expendables.
Please note that we do not expect to receive an official update from Rocky Mountain Pictures on the midweek progress of 2016: Obama's America until Friday. However, unofficial estimates have the film grossing somewhere in the neighborhood of $3 million from Monday through Wednesday. That would place the film's current total in the neighborhood of $12.4 million, which stood at $9.35 million at the end of Sunday.
The Oogieloves in the BIG Balloon Adventure opened with $102,564 from 2,160 locations. That gave the self-distributed family film from Kenn Viselman Presents a very weak per-location average of $47 for the day. With the film being aimed at family audiences, The Oogieloves will hope to pick up the pace over the weekend.
