As was widely expected, The Bourne Legacy led the way at the box office this weekend. The fourth installment of Universal's action thriller franchise (and first starring Jeremy Renner instead of Matt Damon) opened with $38.14 million, which was in line with expectations. It should be noted that the film fell a significant $2.12 million from Sunday's studio estimate, as the Closing Ceremony of the 2012 Olympics appears to have had a larger than expected effect on the marketplace in general on Sunday.
The Bourne Legacy wasn't anywhere near as strong out of the gate as either 2007's The Bourne Ultimatum ($69.28 million) or 2004's The Bourne Supremacy ($52.52 million), but wasn't expected to be given the re-launch nature of the film. With Lionsgate's The Expendables 2 opening this coming Friday, it was especially important for The Bourne Legacy to get off to a solid start this weekend. The film received a B rating on CinemaScore. The audience breakdown for The Bourne Legacy skewed heavily towards moviegoers 30 years and older (69 percent) and slightly towards male moviegoers (52 percent).
Internationally, The Bourne Legacy grossed $7.8 million from 13 foreign territories. The film didn't open in any larger foreign markets this weekend, but will open in Australia, the United Kingdom and Spain this coming weekend. Highlights this weekend included $2.8 million in the Philippines, $1.4 million in Singapore and $1.2 million in Taiwan.
Warner's The Campaign was off to a second place start of $26.59 million. The R-rated comedy starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis opened in line with expectations. The Campaign did open a bit softer than the respective starts of 2010's The Other Guys ($35.54 million) and 2010's Due Date ($32.69 million), but still had a respectable performance given that political comedies are historically tough sells at the box office and that comedies in general (with the obvious exception of Universal's Ted) have under-performed this summer.
With The Campaign receiving a B- CinemaScore, long-term prospects could be a bit up in the air, though on the other hand the film should be helped out by the lack of comedies on the release schedule the near future. The audience breakdown for The Campaign skewed towards moviegoers over 25 (64 percent) and towards male moviegoers (55 percent). Internationally, The Campaign grossed $2.1 million in Australia this weekend.
Fellow Warner Bros. release The Dark Knight Rises saw its three-week first place run end with a third place take of $18.98 million. The third installment of Christopher Nolan's superhero franchise fell 47 percent from last weekend, as the unleashing of three major releases clearly took a toll on the film. With that said The Dark Knight Rises has grossed $389.59 million through 24 days of release, which places it in 15th on the all-time unadjusted domestic chart. The film is currently running 12 percent behind the $441.63 million 24-day performance of 2008's The Dark Knight. IMAX grosses were responsible for $3.615 million (19.05 percent) of this weekend's overall take and have totaled $54.46 million (13.98 percent) to date domestically.
On the international front, The Dark Knight Rises grossed $34.2 million from 58 markets this weekend. That brings the film's international total to $445.3 million and worldwide haul to $834.9 million.
After a so-so midweek start, Sony's Hope Springs built up major momentum once the weekend hit. The romantic comedy/drama starring Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones and Steve Carell opened in fourth with $14.65 million. With Hope Springs playing in a relatively modest 2,361 locations, it earned a very respectable per-location average of $6,205 over the weekend. The five-day start for Hope Springs stands at $19.10 million, which was in line with expectations. With Hope Springs skewing very heavily towards older moviegoers, odds are very good that the film will hold up well throughout the month of August. Hope Springs received a B rating on CinemaScore and generated an opening weekend to Friday ratio of 3.16 to 1 (which was obviously strengthened by opening on a Wednesday).
