Lionsgate's The Expendables 2 grossed $2.16 million on Wednesday to lead the daily box office for a sixth consecutive day. However, the ensemble action sequel was down a very sharp 33 percent from Tuesday. With the summer box office season continuing to wind down, daily declines from Tuesday were large in general on Wednesday for wide releases. In comparison, 2010's The Expendables fell 22 percent on its first Wednesday to gross $3.03 million. The Expendables 2 has grossed $36.78 million in six days, placing it 19 percent behind the $45.66 million six-day start of The Expendables. With this weekend's new wide releases not expected to make much of an impact at the box office, The Expendables 2 is highly likely to remain in first place over the weekend.

The Bourne Legacy held steady in second place with $1.44 million. The fourth installment of Universal's action thriller franchise fell 28 percent from Tuesday and 54 percent from last Wednesday. The Bourne Legacy has grossed $74.78 million in 13 days, which is in line with expectations and places the film 30.5 percent behind the $107.56 million 13-day take of 2004's The Bourne Supremacy.

There was very little separation between third, fourth and fifth places on Wednesday. Warner's The Campaign fell 26 percent from Tuesday to take third with $1.258 million, Focus' ParaNorman slid 31 percent to claim fourth with $1.198 million (placing it $60,331 behind The Campaign for the day) and Warner's The Dark Knight Rises was down 20 percent to land in fifth with $1.197 million (placing it an extremely slim $797 behind ParaNorman for the day). The three films should remain in close proximity to one another over the weekend, which is a fairly common occurrence for holdovers in late August.

Open Road's Hit and Run opened with an estimated Wednesday take of just $625,000.  The low-budget release starring Dax Shepard, Kristen Bell and Bradley Cooper registered an anemic per-location average of $232 for the day and appears headed for a very lackluster five-day start.
