Lionsgate's The Expendables 2 grossed $1.052 million on Thursday and in the process leaped over The Weinstein Company's Lawless to return to the top of the daily box office. The ensemble action sequel outpaced Lawless by a slim $46,050 for the day. The Expendables 2 led the way this week with $18.54 million. That was down 52 percent from the film's opening week performance and brings the film's two-week total to $57.36 million. The Expendables 2 is running 21 percent behind the $72.51 million two-week take of 2010's The Expendables.

As mentioned, Lawless finished in a close second for the day with $1.006 million. The crime drama starring Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy fell a reasonable 11 percent from Wednesday's opening day performance. That represented a slightly stronger first-Thursday hold than that of 2010's The American, which fell 12 percent to gross $1.47 million, but represented a weaker first-Thursday hold that that of last year's The Debt, which fell just 4 percent to gross $0.93 million. With a two-day start of $2.14 million, Lawless appears headed for a four-day weekend gross somewhere in the neighborhood of $11.5 million to $14 million and a six-day start in the area of $13.6 million to $16.1 million.

After grossing an additional $3.82 million during the midweek, 2016 Obama's America officially grossed $10.33 million for the week as a whole from a modest 1,091 locations. The low-budget anti-Obama, conservative documentary finished in sixth place for the week. 2016 has grossed $13.167 million through seven weeks of release and will be playing in 1,747 locations beginning today (representing an increase of 656 locations).

The Oogieloves in the BIG Balloon Adventure grossed $123,024 on Thursday. The self-distributed family film from Kenn Viselman Presents was up 20 percent over Wednesday, but was still only able to manage a weak per-location average of $57 for the day. The Oogieloves has grossed $225,588 in two days and will hope that family audiences start to show up in greater numbers over the weekend.

Please note that because of the holiday weekend today's grosses from Warner Bros. are technically estimates. The studio will be releasing Thursday's actual grosses on Tuesday. In addition, Paramount is waiting until Tuesday to report Thursday's grosses.
