'The Expendables 2' Passes $30 Million Mark

on August 21, 2012 by Daniel Garris

Lionsgate's The Expendables 2 grossed $2.79 million on Monday to lead the daily box office for a fourth consecutive day. The ensemble action sequel fell 65 percent from Sunday's performance. That was a sharper daily decline than the 59 percent 2010's The Expendables fell when it grossed $3.94 million on its first Monday, though The Expendables 2 is also at a bit more of a disadvantage in the comparison by opening a few days later in August than The Expendables did. The Expendables 2 passed the $30 million mark yesterday and has grossed $31.38 million in four days. That is below expectations and places the film 19 percent behind the $38.77 million four-day start of The Expendables.

The Bourne Legacy placed in second with $1.71 million. The fourth installment of Universal's action thriller franchise fell 63 percent from Sunday and 56 percent from last Monday. With the summer box office season nearing its end, daily grosses for holdovers in general were down noticeably from last Monday's grosses. The Bourne Legacy topped the $70 million mark yesterday and has now grossed $71.33 million through eleven days of release.

Warner's The Campaign was up one spot from its fourth place performance over the weekend to take third on Monday with $1.53 million. The R-rated comedy starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis was down 59 percent from Sunday and down 51 percent from last Monday. The Campaign has grossed a solid $52.97 million in eleven days and will hope to stabilize going forward given the lack of traditional comedies entering the marketplace in the near future.

ParaNorman placed in fourth with $1.46 million. The 3D stop-motion film from Focus and animation studio Laika declined 64 percent from Sunday. ParaNorman has grossed $15.54 million in four days, which is towards the lower end of expectations. The film is currently running 13 percent behind the $17.93 million four-day start of 2009's Coraline.

Warner's The Dark Knight Rises rounded out Monday's top five with $1.37 million. The blockbuster superhero sequel fell 59 percent from Sunday and a solid 41 percent from last Sunday. The Dark Knight Rises has grossed $411.16 million in 32 days and will have a strong chance of stabilizing greatly over the next two weeks.

The Odd Life of Timothy Green took sixth for the day with $1.28 million. The modestly budgeted family film from Disney fell 59 percent from Sunday. The Odd Life of Timothy Green has grossed $16.38 million in six days of release. The race for grosses between Timothy Green and ParaNorman could very well remain close going forward.
