‘End of Watch’ Leads Monday with $1.27 Million

on September 25, 2012 by Daniel Garris

Open Road's End of Watch topped the daily box office on Monday with $1.27 million. The low-budget police drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña fell 63 percent from Sunday, which represented a very solid first Monday hold. End of Watch has unexpectedly the led way among this week's four new wide releases thus far with a four-day start of $14.42 million. The film is performing essentially on par with the $14.43 million four-day start of 2010's Brooklyn's Finest and will hope to hold up better than Brooklyn's Finest did with the aid of healthy word of mouth.

Trouble with the Curve placed in second with $0.85 million. The Warner Bros. drama starring Clint Eastwood and Amy Adams fell 68 percent from Sunday. Eastwood's films often display strong holding power at the box office, but thus far daily holds for Trouble with the Curve have left a bit to be desired. With a four-day start of $13.02 million, Trouble with the Curve is currently running 7 percent ahead of the pace of last year's J. Edgar and 38 percent behind the pace of last year's Moneyball.

Relativity's House at the End of the Street grossed $0.62 million to take third. The low-budget PG-13 horror film starring Jennifer Lawrence fell 73 percent from Sunday. House of the End of the Street experienced a weaker first Monday hold than both End of Watch and Trouble with the Curve thanks in part to skewing significantly younger than each of those films. With a four-day start of $12.899 million House at the End of the Street is currently running 15 percent behind the pace of last year's Red Riding Hood and 42 percent behind the pace of this year's The Woman in Black.

Lionsgate's Dredd 3D took in $0.57 million to claim fourth place. The 3D comic book adaptation starring Karl Urban fell 65 percent from Sunday. Despite solid reviews and a pre-existing fanbase, Dredd 3D has only managed a disappointing $6.85 million through four days of release. Having to face new direct competition from Sony's Looper beginning on Friday won't help matters for Dredd 3D either.
