Open Road's End of Watch grossed $1.05 million on Thursday to lead the daily box office for a fifth consecutive day. The low-budget police drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña fell 14 percent from Wednesday. End of Watch unexpectedly led the way this week with a seven-day start of $18.17 million. That was slightly ahead of expectations and places the film 6.5 percent ahead of the $17.06 million one-week start of 2010's Brooklyn's Finest. With the aid of very solid word of mouth, End of Watch will hope to hold up better going forward than police dramas typically do.
Trouble with the Curve held steady in second place with $0.89 million. The Warner Bros. drama starring Clint Eastwood and Amy Adams was down 15 percent from Wednesday. Trouble with the Curve placed in second for the week with a seven-day start of $16.196 million, which was below expectations. The first week performance of Trouble with the Curve was 38 percent softer than the $25.97 million one-week start of last year's Moneyball and 10 percent stronger than the $14.70 million first week take of last year's J. Edgar.
Relativity's House at the End of the Street was up one spot over Wednesday to take third on Thursday with $0.59 million. The low-budget PG-13 horror film starring Jennifer Lawrence fell 17 percent from Wednesday. House at the End of the Street placed in third for the week with a seven-day start of $15.07 million. That was a bit below pre-release expectations and 40 percent softer than the $25.16 million first week performance of The Woman in Black earlier this year.
Lionsgate's Dredd 3D placed in fourth with $0.48 million. The 3D comic book adaptation starring Karl Urban was down a reasonable 10 percent from Wednesday, but still only managed to gross $8.58 million in its first week of release. That was only good enough for sixth place this week, an outcome made worse by the fact Dredd 3D was the week's most expensive wide release. Dredd 3D is currently running 22 percent behind the $10.98 million one-week start of last year's The Thing.
