‘Lawless’ Overtakes ‘The Possession’ for First Place on Monday

As the overall box office remained in its slow post-summer state, Lawless was able to move into first place on Monday. The Weinstein Company acquisition starring Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy grossed $0.559 million for the day. Lawless fell 64 percent from Sunday, which represented one of the day's better daily holds among wide releases. Lawless has grossed $24.08 million in 13 days, placing it 8 percent ahead of the pace of 2011's The Debt and 16 percent behind the pace of 2010's The American.

The Possession saw its streak of consecutive days at the top of the daily box office snapped at ten after finishing in a close second on Monday with $0.555 million. The PG-13 horror film from Lionsgate trailed Lawless by a very slim $3,697 for the day. The Possession has grossed a very solid $33.72 million in eleven days, which places it 1 percent ahead of the pace of 2010's The Last Exorcism.

This weekend's new wide releases remained soft on Monday. CBS Films' The Words was down 69 percent from Sunday to gross $336,704, while Lionsgate's The Cold Light of Day fell 66 percent to gross $145,300. Through four days of release, respective total grosses stand at $5.09 million for The Words and at $1.98 million for The Cold Light of Day.

Meanwhile, Indiana Jones and The Raiders of the Lost Ark: The IMAX Experience grossed $151,520 for the day. Through four days of release, the IMAX re-issue has grossed $1.83 million from 267 IMAX locations. The lifetime unadjusted domestic gross for Raiders of the Lost Ark now stands at $246.86 million.
