‘Lawless’ Remains in First Place on Tuesday

Lawless grossed $0.758 million on Tuesday to lead the daily box office for a second straight day. The Weinstein Company acquisition starring Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy was up 36 percent over Monday and down 30 percent from last Tuesday. Lawless has grossed $24.84 million through two weeks of release. Lawless is currently running 9 percent ahead of the pace of last year's The Debt and 15 percent behind the pace of 2010's The American.

The Possession grossed $0.674 million to hold steady in second place. The PG-13 horror film from Lionsgate trailed Lawless by $84,606 for the day. The Possession increased 21 percent over Monday and fell 44 percent from last Tuesday. With a twelve-day take of $34.395 million, The Possession is running 1 percent stronger than 2010's The Last Exorcism.

Rocky Mountain's 2016: Obama's America took third place for the day with $0.525 million. The anti-Obama, conservative documentary was up a modest 1 percent over Monday, but was also down just 30 percent from last Tuesday. 2016 has grossed $27.16 million to date, as the film continues to perform very well for a political documentary.

This week's new wide releases experienced significant daily percent increases on Tuesday, but still remained soft on Tuesday. CBS Films' The Words was up 48 percent to gross $499,531, while Lionsgate's The Cold Light of Day increased 32 percent to gross $192,164. Respective five-day grosses stand at $5.59 million for The Words and at $2.17 million for The Cold Light of Day.

Indiana Jones and The Raiders of the Lost Ark: The IMAX Experience increased 21 percent to gross $182,872 on Tuesday. Through five days of release, the IMAX re-issue has grossed $2.01 million from 267 IMAX locations. The lifetime unadjusted domestic gross for Raiders of the Lost Ark now stands at $247.04 million.
