Lionsgate's The Possession grossed $0.78 million to lead the daily box office for a sixth consecutive day on Wednesday. The PG-13 horror film was down a sharp 35 percent from Tuesday, as grosses for wide releases in general were down sharply on Wednesday, with opening night of the NFL season and the Democratic National Convention both surely having an added effect on the box office. The Possession has grossed $23.06 million through six days of release, placing it 4 percent behind the $23.92 million four-day start of 2010's The Last Exorcism. With expectations being modest for CBS Film's The Words, The Possession will have a good chance of holding onto first place this coming weekend.

Lawless held steady in second place on Wednesday with $0.69 million. The Weinstein Company acquisition starring Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy slid 36 percent from Tuesday, but was down a respectable 40 percent from last Wednesday's opening day performance. With an eight-day start of $16.78 million, Lawless continues to perform in line with pre-release expectations. Compared to previous Wednesday before Labor Day releases, Lawless is currently running 2 percent ahead of the $16.44 million eight-day start of last year's The Debt and 23 percent softer than the $21.71 million eight-day start of 2010's The American.

Holding up much better on Wednesday was Rocky Mountain's 2016: Obama's America. The low-budget anti-Obama, conservative documentary grossed $0.65 million, which was down just 14 percent from Tuesday and good enough for third place for the day. 2016 has grossed $22.12 million to date.

Lionsgate's The Expendables 2 fell one spot and 34 percent from Tuesday to claim fourth with $0.52 million. In the process the ensemble action film topped the $70 million mark yesterday. The Expendables 2 has grossed $70.12 million through 20 days of domestic release and is performing relatively stronger internationally.
