‘Argo’ Leads Monday with $0.85 Million

on October 30, 2012 by Daniel Garris

Warner's Argo led the way on Monday with $0.85 million, as the overall box office remained slow. The awards season hopeful directed by and starring Ben Affleck was down 71 percent from Sunday and down just 19 percent from last Monday. While grosses were obviously affected by Hurricane Sandy on Monday, films in general still held up reasonably well in comparison to last Monday, as grosses for last Monday had been deflated by the third Presidential Debate. Argo has grossed a stronger than expected $61.36 million in 18 days, placing it 5 percent behind the $64.87 million 18-day performance of 2010's The Town.

Fellow Warner Bros. release Cloud Atlas placed in second with $0.72 million. Like Argo, the pricey film from the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer also fell 71 percent from Sunday. Cloud Atlas has managed just $10.33 million in four days. While that isn't that far off from the film's muted pre-release expectations, it is very disappointing given the film's price-tag. Cloud Atlas is currently running 21 percent softer than the $13.12 million four-day start of In Time last year.

Open Road's Silent Hill: Revelation 3D took third place with $0.52 million. The 3D horror sequel fell 69 percent from Sunday, which represented one of Monday's better daily holds among wide releases. With that said, Silent Hill: Revelation 3D is still performing below expectations with a lackluster four-day start of $8.54 million. The film is currently running 60 percent weaker than the $21.57 million four-day take of 2006's Silent Hill.

Paranormal Activity 4 claimed fourth with $0.49 million. The fourth installment of Paramount's low-budget horror franchise was down 73 percent from Sunday and down 62 percent from last Monday. Paranormal Activity 4, while still performing well in relation to its cost, has grossed a softer than expected $42.96 million in eleven days. That places the film 36 percent behind the $67.00 million eleven-day start of 2010's Paranormal Activity 2.
