'Sinister' Tops 'Argo' & 'Taken 2' for #1 on Friday

on October 13, 2012 by Shawn Robbins

The box office hot streak continues this weekend as a couple of new releases made a splash on Friday, though #1 for the weekend may still belong to Taken 2.

Sinister rode a successful buzz campaign to reach $7.45 million on opening day. Boxoffice.com is projecting the horror pic will tally close to $18.2 million for the weekend. The caveat here is that Summit Entertainment is including grosses from 10pm Thursday night, which might unofficially mean that Taken 2 beat it on Friday.

Ben Affleck's Argo posted a solid debut with $5.93 million on Friday. While the number is lower than that of The Town two years ago, it was expected due to the subject matter and still positions the film well for a long run before its inevitable Oscar push. We're projecting $18 million for the weekend.

Here Comes the Boom turned out to be another soft opener for Kevin James. With so much competition in the market for family audiences (James' bread and butter), the flick could only muster $3.63 million on Friday and should bring in $11.5 million over the weekend.

Seven Psychopaths took in $1.36 million on Friday and should haul in $4 million for its debut frame, although positive word of mouth could drive it in the long run.

Meanwhile, Atlas Shrugged: Part 2 grossed $692k for its opening day and looks to bank $1.9 million for the weekend.

Last week's openers fared relatively well considering the amount of new competition: Taken 2 was down 62% Friday-to-Friday for $7 million and should reach $22 million in its sophomore frame, while Frankenweenie eased 46% from opening day last week to $1.786 million yesterday. The latter is expected to hit $6.8 million this weekend.
