Sony's Skyfall was off to massive start this weekend with a first place take of $88.36 million. After grossing an additional $2.2 million from Thursday's limited launch in IMAX and other large format locations, the 23rd installment of the James Bond franchise has grossed $90.56 million to date domestically. Skyfall easily delivered the largest debut ever for a 007 film, both unadjusted and adjusted for ticket price inflation. The previous record holder of both franchise high-marks, 2008's Quantum of Solace, debuted with $67.53 million, which adjusts to $74.68 million when factoring in ticket price inflation. Skyfall also received an added boost in the comparison from playing in IMAX locations (IMAX grosses were responsible for $13.1 million of the film's weekend gross). Skyfall delivered the sixth largest opening weekend gross of all-time for the month of November, with the five films ahead of it all belonging to either the Twilight or Harry Potter franchises.
An impressive aspect of the opening weekend performance of Skyfall was that the film generated an opening weekend to Friday ratio of 2.90 to 1 after debuting with $30.50 million on Friday. That boasts very well for the film's holding power going forward. Early strong word of mouth (the film received an A rating on CinemaScore), strong reviews and the Veterans Day holiday falling on a Sunday all helped the early holding power of the film this weekend. In comparison, 2008's Quantum of Solace generated an opening weekend to Friday ratio of 2.50 to 1, while 2006's Casino Royale had a ratio of 2.77 to 1.
The audience breakdown for Skyfall skewed towards male moviegoers (60 percent) and towards older moviegoers (75 percent were over the age of 25).
Internationally, Skyfall took in $89.0 million this weekend. That brings the film's international total to $428.6 million and worldwide haul to $519.2 million. The film has grossed $117.5 million in the United Kingdom alone thus far (it grossed $18.2 million in the United Kingdom this weekend).
After a good start last weekend, Disney's Wreck-It Ralph held up well this weekend to place in second with $33.01 million. The video game themed 3D computer animated film fell 33 percent from last weekend, which was impressive when taking into account the opening weekend performance of Skyfall. Wreck-It Ralph was helped out this weekend by strong early word of mouth, Veterans Day falling on Sunday and the lack of new family fare entering the marketplace this weekend. Wreck-It Ralph has grossed $93.65 million in ten-days, placing it 5 percent ahead of the $88.82 million ten-day start of 2010's Megamind, which fell 37 percent in its second weekend to gross $29.12 million. Wreck-It Ralph (and the marketplace in general) should perform very strong on Monday as a result of the Veterans Day holiday.
Still very early in its international launch, Wreck-It Ralph grossed $11.2 million from 18 foreign territories this weekend. That places the film's international total at $26.3 million and current worldwide gross at $119.9 million.
Paramount's Flight experienced a very respectable second weekend hold in the face of Skyfall, as it was down 41 percent to place in third with $14.79 million. The Denzel Washington vehicle directed by Robert Zemeckis has grossed $47.46 million through ten days of release and continues to post healthy per-location averages in the process. Flight is currently running 13 percent ahead of the $41.87 million 10-day take of 2010's Unstoppable. In comparison, Unstoppable fell 43 percent in its second weekend to gross $13.01 million.
On the platform front, Disney's Lincoln was off to a strong start of $944,308. The Steven Spielberg directed DreamWorks film played in just 11 locations this weekend, giving it a per-location average of $85,846 for the frame. That is encouraging news for the film as it heads into wide release this coming Friday with an estimated location count of 1,500.
