‘Skyfall’ #1 on Friday; in Tight Race with ‘Rise of the Guardians’ This Weekend

on December 08, 2012 by Daniel Garris

Skyfall led the way on Friday with an estimated $3.1 million. That was down a solid 36 percent from last Friday's performance. Skyfall is currently headed for a weekend take of $10.8 million. That will likely be good enough for the James Bond film to reclaim first place this weekend, though Rise of the Guardians could still make it a very close race depending on just how well it holds up today and on Sunday.

Rise of the Guardians placed in fourth on Friday with an estimated $2.3 million. The holiday themed 3D computer animated film was down a slim 23 percent from last Friday. Given its holiday themes and family audience, Rise of the Guardians should pick up enough today to move into second place for the entire frame with a weekend gross in the neighborhood of $10.6 million.

Holdovers occupied the rest of the top five on Friday. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 placed in second with an estimated $2.82 million, Lincoln took third with $2.57 million and Life of Pi landed in fifth with $2.26 million. Breaking Dawn - Part 2, Lincoln and Life of Pi will remained bunched together throughout the rest of the weekend and are currently headed for respective weekend grosses of $9.0 million, $8.8 million and $8.5 million.

The weekend's one new wide release, Playing for Keeps debuted in sixth place with a lackluster $2.13 million on Friday. The romantic comedy from FilmDistrict starring Gerard Butler is set to open with $6.0 million for the weekend, which is in line with the low pre-release expectations for the film.

While this weekend's combined box office will represent one of the year's slowest frames, it will also be the frame that moves the yearly domestic box office total for 2012 over the $10 billion milestone. 2012 now marks the fourth consecutive year that the combined yearly box office has topped the $10 billion mark.

The marketplace will obviously pick back up in a very big way next weekend with the release of Warner's highly anticipated The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on Friday.
