‘The Hobbit’ Falls Sharply, But Remains #1 with Ease

Tuesday, Dec. 25 Update:

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey grossed an estimated $6.91 million on Monday. That represented a 45 percent decrease from Sunday and a decrease of just 11 percent from last Monday. The eleven-day total for The Hobbit stands at $157.0 million. The Hobbit is currently running 11 percent stronger than the $141.17 million eleven-day take of I Am Legend, which fell 57 percent to gross $4.40 million on Christmas Eve back in 2007 (the last time Christmas Eve fell on a Monday).

Sunday, Dec. 23 Update:

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey grossed an estimated $36.7 million to remain in first place with ease this weekend. However, the Peter Jackson directed 3D fantasy film fell a sharp 57 percent from last weekend. While that decline is a bit alarming, the film did show some signs of stabilizing on Saturday as it increased 40 percent over Friday's performance to gross $14.3 million for the day. This weekend's percentage decline matched the 57 percent 2007's I Am Legend fell in its second weekend when it grossed $33.5 million.

The Hobbit has grossed $149.86 million in ten days, placing it 10 percent ahead of the $136.77 million ten-day take of I Am Legend (which didn't have the added advantage of higher priced 3D admissions), but is likely to hold up better throughout the holidays than I Am Legend did given its appeal with family audiences. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is currently running 11 percent softer than the $168.06 million ten-day start of 2002's The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

The Hobbit held up better internationally this weekend, as it grossed an estimated $91.0 million from 59 foreign territories. That brings the film's international total to $284.0 million and current worldwide haul to $433.9 million. The Hobbit opened with $16.8 million in Russia this weekend, while registering key second weekend grosses of $12.6 million in Germany, $9.1 million in the United Kingdom, $6.7 million in France and $4.2 million in Spain.

Jack Reacher led the way among this weekend's new releases with an estimated second place take of $15.6 million. The Tom Cruise vehicle from Paramount opened in line with pre-release expectations. Opening weekends in the days and weeks before Christmas are typically deflated and that was clearly the case this weekend for Jack Reacher and the rest of the weekend's new wide releases. Jack Reacher will hope to hold up well throughout the holiday season; an opening weekend to Friday ratio of 3.06 to 1 and an A- rating on CinemaScore are both promising signs in that direction.

Internationally, Jack Reacher grossed $2.5 million from 7 smaller international markets. The film is set to open in a number of international markets (including France and the United Kingdom) next weekend.

Also performing in line with expectations this weekend was Universal's This Is 40. The Judd Apatow directed comedy placed in third with an estimated $12.0 million. December comedies aimed at adult audiences typically see very strong holds throughout the holidays, so chances are good that This Is 40 will fall into that category. The film registered an encouraging opening weekend to Friday ratio of 3.25 to 1, though its B- rating on CinemaScore is a bit concerning. The audience breakdown for This Is 40 skewed towards female moviegoers (57 percent).

The weekend's other two wide releases, Paramount's The Guilt Trip and Disney's Monsters, Inc. 3D, both opened to softer numbers. The Guilt Trip placed in sixth with an estimated $5.39 million, while Monsters, Inc. 3D followed closely in seventh with an estimated $5.04 million. Since their Wednesday debuts, The Guilt Trip and Monsters, Inc. 3D have registered respective five-day grosses of $7.42 million and $6.52 million. Both films will have the opportunity to hold up very well going forward, but the soft openings obviously limit total gross potential.

In semi-wide release, Paramount's Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away grossed an estimated $2.14 million. Worlds Away only managed a per-location average of $2,542 this weekend, though it should also be noted that the film only received two screenings a day per screen this weekend. Including prior preview grosses, Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away has grossed $2.25 million to date.

Sony's Zero Dark Thirty opened to very encouraging results in platform release. The Kathryn Bigelow directed awards season hopeful grossed an estimated $410,000 from just five locations in New York and Los Angeles. That gave Zero Dark Thirty a strong per-location average of $82,000 for the frame. Since its debut on Wednesday, Zero Dark Thirty has grossed $639,012 in five days. Zero Dark Thirty will expand into wide release on January 11.

In other platform news, Sony Pictures Classics' Amour grossed an estimated $70,662 from 3 locations in New York and Los Angeles. That gave the Michael Haneke directed film a very solid per-location average of $23,554. Amour has grossed $100,213 in its first five days of release.

Lionsgate's The Impossible and Paramount Vantage's Not Fade Away didn't make the same type of per-location impact this weekend. The Impossible grossed an estimated $138,750 from 15 locations for a per-location average of $9,250. Not Fade Away grossed an estimated $19,000 from 3 locations in New York and Los Angeles for a per-location average of $6,333. Not Fade Away will expand into additional locations this coming Friday, while The Impossible will expand its run on January 4.
