'Hansel and Gretel' Wins Friday; 'Parker' & 'Movie 43' Flop

on January 26, 2013 by Shawn Robbins

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters took first place on Friday with an estimated $6 million gross. The R-rated 3D fairy tale pic should continue to perform similar to the pace of last summer's Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which grossed $6.25 million on opening day toward a $16.3 million weekend. Boxoffice.com is currently projecting a $16 million opening weekend for Witch Hunters.

Last week's winner, Mama, dropped 62.4 percent from last Friday to an estimated $3.8 million yesterday. The decline was mostly expected due to the rush of teenage crowds on the film's opening day. The film is on track for a $12.5 million second weekend gross.

Silver Linings Playbook continues to exhibit strong Oscar-boosted legs. The Best Picture nominee was down just 22 percent from last Friday, taking in almost $2.34 million yesterday. The film's total stands at an estimated $61.8 million through Friday and should bring in $8.7 million this weekend.

Zero Dark Thirty is also keeping up a solid performance, generating $2.325 million on Friday and pushing its domestic tally up to $62.43 million. Boxoffice is projecting an $8.5 million weekend.

Jason Statham's latest action flick grabbed $2.13 million on Friday. Parker is on pace for a $6.5 million debut weekend, slightly behind 2012's Safe ($7.9 million) and even further behind 2011's The Mechanic ($11.4 million).

The comedy mishmash of Movie 43 failed to capture much of an audience and drew only $1.8 million on Friday. Worth noting is that Movie 43 drew one of the lowest gross-to-tweet ratios we've seen since Twitter tracking began. The R rating, obscure title and lack of any plot to sell in the marketing seem to be the culprits. We're projecting an opening weekend of $4.6 million.

Broken City was down an alarming 64.4 percent from its opening day last week to an estimated $1.05 million yesterday. The flick has totaled $12.3 million after eight days in release and should rake in close to $3.6 million for its sophomore frame.
