'Jack the Giant Slayer' Passes $30 Million Mark

on March 06, 2013 by Daniel Garris

Warner's Jack the Giant Slayer grossed $2.09 million on Tuesday to lead the daily box office for a fifth consecutive day. On the heels of a lackluster Monday hold, the expensive Bryan Singer directed fantasy film was up a healthy 25 percent on Tuesday. In comparison, last year's John Carter increased 11 percent on its first Tuesday to gross $2.80 million. Jack the Giant Slayer surpassed the $30 million mark yesterday and has now grossed $30.96 million in five films. That is a disappointing domestic start given the film's hefty price tag and is 13 percent softer than the $35.52 million five-day take of John Carter. With Disney's Oz: The Great and Powerful entering the marketplace on Friday, Jack the Giant Slayer is likely to experience a significant decline in its second weekend.

21 and Over held steady in second place with $0.90 million. Relativity's modestly budgeted R-rated comedy was up 22 percent over Monday. After a weaker than expected opening weekend performance, 21 and Over is holding up well thus far during the midweek. It should be noted that it is common for R-rated comedies to generate solid midweek business during spring break. With a five-day start of $10.40 million, 21 and Over is running 59 percent softer than the $25.41 million five-day take of last year's Project X.

Universal's Identity Thief took in $0.81 million to remain in third. The blockbuster comedy starring Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy was up 28 percent over Monday and down 34 percent from last Tuesday. Identity Thief has grossed a stronger than expected $108.87 million in 26 days, which makes it the highest grossing release of 2013 thus far. Snitch placed in fourth on Tuesday with $0.68 million. The Dwayne Johnson vehicle from Lionsgate and Summit was up 27 percent over Monday and down a solid 38 percent from last Tuesday. The twelve-day total for Snitch stands at $25.70 million.
