'42' Comfortably Leads Monday with $2.23 Million

on April 16, 2013 by Daniel Garris

Warner's 42 took in $2.23 million on Monday to lead the daily box office for a fourth consecutive day. The well received Jackie Robinson biopic fell 69 percent from Sunday. 42 continues to exceed expectations with a four-day start of $29.72 million and is set to surpass the $30 million mark today. The film is currently running an impressive 42 percent stronger than the $20.95 million four-day start of 2011's Moneyball (which fell 67 percent on its first Monday to gross $1.45 million). With the strong start, 42 marks a nice turn around for Warner Bros. after the studio's string of under-performers in early 2013.

Evil Dead moved up to second place with $0.74 million. The modestly budgeted horror remake fell 67 percent from Sunday and 56 percent from last Monday. Due in part to the film's R rating, midweek holding power has tended to be relatively more impressive for Evil Dead on weekdays than on weekends. Evil Dead has grossed $42.27 million in eleven days, placing it 6 percent behind the $45.03 million eleven-day take of 2004's Dawn of the Dead.

The Croods placed in third with $0.72 million, while fellow blockbuster G.I. Joe: Retaliation followed closely behind in fourth with $0.69 million. Fox's The Croods was down 82 percent from Sunday and a slim 26 percent from last Monday. Paramount's G.I. Joe: Retaliation fell 77 percent from Sunday and 44 percent from last Monday. Respective total grosses stand at $143.16 million for The Croods in 25 days and at $103.21 million for G.I. Joe: Retaliation in 19 days.

The Weinstein Company's Scary Movie 5 found itself in fifth place on Monday with $0.64 million. The fifth installment of the horror comedy franchise was down 76 percent from Sunday. After experiencing a respectable hold on Saturday, Scary Movie 5 has lost major momentum on Sunday and Monday. Scary Movie 5 has grossed a softer than expected $14.79 million in four days. That places the film 22.5 percent behind the $19.08 million four-day start of this year's A Haunted House (which fell 74 percent on its first Monday to gross $0.98 millon).
