on April 24, 2013 by Daniel Garris

Universal's Oblivion grossed $3.16 million on Tuesday to remain at the top of the daily box office. The Joseph Kosinski directed sci-fi film starring Tom Cruise increased a solid 17 percent over Monday. Oblivion surpassed the $40 million mark on Tuesday and has now grossed $42.92 million through five days of release. The film is currently running 23 percent stronger than the $34.89 million five-day start of 2008's The Day the Earth Stood Still and 21 percent behind the $54.48 million five-day take of 2006's Mission: Impossible III. With expectations being modest for both Paramount's Pain and Gain and Lionsgate's The Big Wedding, Oblivion will have a good chance of remaining in first place over the upcoming weekend.

42 held steady in second place with $1.39 million. Warner's Jackie Robinson biopic was up 30 percent over Monday and down 45 percent from last Tuesday. In general, midweek business for films in wide release has notably declined from last week. 42 continues to exceed expectations with a twelve-day take of $56.22 million. That places the film an impressive 41 percent ahead of the $39.91 million twelve-day take of 2011's Moneyball.

The Place Beyond the Pines took in $595,599 to remain in third. The Derek Cianfrance directed film starring Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper was up a healthy 36 percent over Monday. While the Focus release didn't have the greatest initial expansion into wide release this past Friday, the film has now held up nicely each of the past four days. The Place Beyond the Pines has grossed $12.68 million to date.

The Croods and G.I. Joe: Retaliation took fourth and fifth place respectively on Tuesday with $530,490 and $474,462. Fox's The Croods was up 32 percent over Monday and down 38 percent from last Tuesday, while Paramount's Retaliation was up 29 percent over Monday and down 47 percent from last Tuesday. Current total domestic grosses stand at $155.56 million for The Croods in 33 days and at $112.04 million for G.I. Joe: Retaliation in 27 days.
