'Despicable Me 2' Leads Tuesday with $6.85M

on July 17, 2013 by Daniel Garris

Universal's Despicable Me 2 took in $6.85 million on Tuesday to lead the daily box office for the 13th time in the past 14 days. The blockbuster computer animated sequel from Illumination Entertainment was up a healthy 21 percent over Monday and down 43 percent from last Tuesday. Given that Monsters University also experienced a nice Tuesday increase, both computer animated films may have received an added boost on Tuesday before Fox's Turbo enters the marketplace today. Despicable Me 2 has grossed a massive $240.87 million in 14 days and is now the fourth highest grossing release of 2013 thus far domestically. And today the film will surpass Monsters University to move into third place on that list.

Grown Ups 2 took in $5.27 million to hold steady in second place. The Adam Sandler led comedy sequel from Sony was up 11 percent over Monday. In comparison, 2010's Grown Ups fell 14 percent on its first Tuesday to take in $4.58 million, though it should be reminded that Tuesday holds in general are stronger now than they were back in 2010. Grown Ups 2 surpassed the $50 million mark yesterday and has grossed a very solid $51.54 million through five days. That places the film a slim 2 percent ahead of the $50.39 million five-day start of Grown Ups.

Warner's Pacific Rim grossed $4.42 million to remain in third. The pricey Guillermo del Toro directed sci-fi action film increased a modest 9 percent over Monday. Pacific Rim has now posted the day's poorest daily hold among wide releases for two consecutive days. That isn't a good early sign for the film's long term prospects. With a five-day start of $45.76 million, Pacific Rim is running in line with its wide-ranging expectations and 10 percent ahead of the $41.44 million five-day take of 2008's Hellboy II: The Golden Army (which fell 14 percent on its first Tuesday to gross $3.19 million).

The Heat grossed $2.18 million to continue to claim fourth on Tuesday. The comedy from Fox starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy was up a strong 23 percent over Monday and down just 37 percent from last Tuesday. The Heat has grossed $116.31 million in 19 days and is currently running 18 percent ahead of $98.93 million 19-day take of 2009's The Proposal.
