'Monsters University' Leads for a Final Day, before 'Despicable Me 2' Takes Over on Wednesday

on July 03, 2013 by Daniel Garris

In what will be its final day at the top of the daily box office, Disney's Monsters University led the way on Tuesday with $7.57 million. The blockbuster computer animated prequel from Pixar fell 4 percent from Monday and 4 percent from last Tuesday. With Monday's grosses being inflated by Canada Day and Universal's Despicable Me 2 and Disney's The Long Ranger both launching at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, it is quite understandable that most wide releases experienced daily percentage declines on Tuesday. It will be especially interesting to see just how Monsters University holds in the coming days with Despicable Me 2 now in the marketplace. Monsters University has grossed a strong $185.91 million in twelve days, which leaves the film just $14.09 million away from reaching the $200 million domestic milestone.

Turning towards Wednesday, Despicable Me 2 was off to a very strong start with an estimated $4.7 million from late night shows. The Lone Ranger followed quite a ways behind with a soft, but not disastrous $2.0 million from late night shows. Those late night grosses will be counted towards the respective opening day performances of each film. The late night performance of Despicable Me 2 was especially impressive given the family friendly nature of the film and the film is set to dominate the Independence Day weekend box office with ease at this rate. The Lone Ranger looks to finish in a very distant second place, with the degree of the film's holds over the next few days having much to do with whether or not the film's older skewing audience (who typically don't rush out as fast) can balance out the negative buzz from its very poor reviews.

Turning back towards Tuesday, The Heat held steady in second place with $5.38 million. Fox's modestly budgeted comedy starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy increased 1 percent over Monday, which represented the day's strongest daily hold among wide releases. The Heat continues to outpace expectations with a five-day start of $49.82 million and will zoom past the $50 million mark today. The film is currently running 16 percent ahead of the $42.94 million five-day start of 2009's The Proposal (which took in $4.66 million on its first Tuesday).
