Lee Daniels' The Butler led the daily box office on Tuesday with $2.18 million. The awards season hopeful from The Weinstein Company starring Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey has now led the daily box office for eleven of the past twelve days. The Butler was up 18 percent over Monday and down a healthy 29 percent from last Tuesday. The twelve-day total for The Butler stands at a strong $55.79 million. The Butler is running just 1 percent behind the $56.22 million twelve-day take of this year's 42 and is set to move ahead of the pace of 42 in the coming days.

Warner's We're the Millers grossed $1.65 million to remain in second. The break-out comedy starring Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis increased 15 percent over Monday and fell 33 percent from last Tuesday. We're the Millers continues to benefit from strong word of mouth and from the limited amount of comedies currently in wide release. With an impressive three-week total of $94.37 million, We're the Millers is now only $5.63 million away from reaching the $100 million domestic milestone.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones held up nicely on Tuesday. Sony's young adult adaptation starring Lily Collins was up 19 percent and one spot over Monday to take third with $1.07 million. However, in the bigger picture The Mortal Instruments has grossed a very soft $16.06 million in its first week of release. That places the film 28 percent ahead of the $12.54 million one-week start of this year's Beautiful Creatures and 24 percent behind the $21.03 million seven-day take of 2010's Vampires Suck.

Disney's Planes was down one spot to claim fourth with $1.00 million. The computer animated spin-off was up 9 percent over Monday and down 37 percent from last Tuesday. The 19-day total for Planes stands at a solid $61.52 million. Planes should continue to hold up well this coming weekend with aid from the Labor Day holiday.

Sony's Elysium was up one spot from Monday to round out Tuesday's top five with $0.96 million. In the process, the sci-fi film starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster surpassed the $70 million mark yesterday. Elysium has grossed $70.63 million through 19 days of release. The film was up 22 percent over Monday and down 48 percent from last Tuesday.
