'Riddick' Passes $20M Mark on Monday

on September 10, 2013 by Daniel Garris

Universal's Riddick led the way on Monday with $1.398 million. The third installment of the Vin Diesel led sci-fi franchise has now topped the daily box office for four consecutive days. Riddick declined 69 percent from Sunday, which was in line with the type of daily declines experienced by most wide releases yesterday. Riddick topped the $20 million mark yesterday and has grossed $20.43 million through four days. That places the film 24 percent behind the $26.94 million four-day start of 2004's The Chronicles of Riddick, though it should be reminded that Riddick was far less expensive than The Chronicles of Riddick.

Lee Daniels' The Butler placed in second with $0.663 million. The early awards season hopeful from The Weinstein Company starring Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey was down 68 percent from Sunday and down 88 percent from last Monday's Labor Day inflated gross. The Butler has grossed an impressive $92.07 million through 25 days of release; leaving the film just $7.93 million away from reaching the $100 million domestic milestone.

Lionsgate's Instructions Not Included claimed third on Monday with $0.583 million. The low-budget Eugenio Derbez comedy vehicle outpaced Warner's We're the Millers by a very slim $5,439 for the day. Instructions Not Included was down a sharp 82 percent from Sunday, as the film is clearly much more of a weekend film due in part to its family audience. The Pantelion Films release was down 77 percent from last Monday. Instructions Not Included earned a per-location average of $813 from 717 locations for the day and has now grossed a strong $20.94 million in eleven days.

We're the Millers took fourth place with $0.577 million. The break-out comedy starring Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis fell 68 percent from Sunday and 84 percent from last Monday. We're the Millers has grossed $124.19 million in 34 days, as it continues to pad its status as one of the larger surprise hits of this summer.
