$139.5M in Two Weeks for 'Gravity'

on October 18, 2013 by Daniel Garris

Warner's Gravity took in $3.52 million on Thursday to lead the daily box office for a 14th consecutive day. The Alfonso Cuarón directed sci-fi drama starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney was up 1 percent over Wednesday and down a very solid 34 percent from last Thursday. Gravity was easily the week's top film with a weekly take of $60.40 million. That was down just 24 percent from the film's opening week performance and brings the film's two-week total to a terrific $139.54 million. Gravity is currently running 42 percent ahead of the $98.36 million 14-day take of this year's The Heat and 16 percent behind the $165.83 million two-week gross of 2010's Inception. Gravity is widely expected to remain in first place over the weekend.

IMAX grosses were responsible for $0.84 million of the film's total gross on Thursday (23.9 percent). To date, IMAX grosses for Gravity have totaled $30.66 million, which accounts for 22.0 percent of the film's overall total gross.

Sony's Captain Phillips rounded out its first week of release with a second place take of $2.01 million. The critically acclaimed Paul Greengrass directed film starring Tom Hanks was down 4 percent from Wednesday. Captain Phillips placed in second for the week with a stronger than expected seven-day start of $36.03 million. That places Captain Phillips just 5 percent behind the $37.95 million seven-day gross of The Departed. With the aid of strong word of mouth and of skewing towards older moviegoers, chances are strong that Captain Phillips will hold up very well over the weekend.

Fellow Sony release Carrie was off to a solid start on Thursday night with an estimated $0.725 million from late night shows that began at 10 p.m. As is commonplace, those grosses are expected to be counted towards Friday's opening day performance. In comparison, the late night start for Carrie was a bit below the $1.01 million late night launch of Sinister last October. Check back throughout the weekend for further box office updates on the progress of Carrie, Gravity and the rest of this weekend's line-up.

Turning back towards Thursday, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 grossed $0.84 million to remain in third. Sony's 3D computer animated sequel was up 26 percent over Wednesday and down a healthy 15 percent from last Thursday. Cloudy 2 placed in third for the week with $19.20 million. That was down just 22.5 percent from the previous frame and brings the film's three-week total to a very solid $83.04 million.
