'Last Vegas' Moves into First Place on Thursday

CBS Films' Last Vegas continued to display strong early holding power on Thursday as the ensemble comedy moved into first place with $1.397 million. Last Vegas fell a slim 1 percent from Wednesday. That represented one of the day's stronger daily holds among wide releases aimed at adult moviegoers, as the late-night launch of Thor: The Dark World has a noticeable effect on most non-family films. Last Vegas grossed $22.43 million in its first week of release. That was on the high end of expectations and was good enough for third place for the week.

Coming as no surprise, Disney's Thor: The Dark World was off to a strong late night start. The Marvel superhero sequel starring Chris Hemsworth grossed an estimated $7.1 million from shows that began at 8 p.m. on Thursday. As is commonplace, those grosses are expected to be counted towards Friday's opening day performance. The $7.1 million late night start of Thor: The Dark World landed in between the $3.3 million midnight start of 2011's Thor and the $15.6 million 9 p.m. start of Iron Man 3 earlier this year. Furthermore, the late night start of Thor: The Dark World was just below the $7.5 million midnight start of 2010's Iron Man 2. Check back throughout the weekend for further box office updates on the progress of Thor: The Dark World.

Turning back towards Thursday Paramount's Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa was up one spot from Wednesday to claim second with $1.267 million. The successful Jackass spin-off starring Johnny Knoxville was down 4 percent from Wednesday and down just 29 percent from last Thursday (Halloween). Bad Grandpa placed in second for the week with $25.89 million. That was down 38 percent from the film's opening week performance and brings the film's two-week total to $67.45 million.

Ender's Game took a clear hit from Thor: The Dark World on Thursday. The sci-fi film from Lionsgate was down two spots and a sharp 17 percent from Wednesday with a third place take of $1.249 million. Ender's Game was the week's top film with a respectable seven-day start of $33.75 million, but is looking as though it will be rather front-loaded. The film is currently running 5 percent behind the $35.39 million seven-day start of After Earth earlier this year.

Free Birds rounded out its first week of release with a fifth place take of $0.721 million. Relativity's 3D computer animated film was up 29 percent over Wednesday. Free Birds placed in fourth for the week with a so-so $19.02 million seven-day start. Thus far, Free Birds is essentially performing on par with the $19.19 million seven-day start of 2010's Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole.
