'The LEGO Movie' Tops Tuesday with $3.13 Million

on February 12, 2014 by Daniel Garris

Warner's The LEGO Movie grossed $3.13 million on Tuesday to lead the daily box office for a fifth consecutive day. The break-out 3D computer animated film was down 10 percent from Monday, though it should be noted the family films in general experienced daily percentage decreases on Tuesday (Frozen was down 9 percent, while The Nut Job fell 21 percent). The LEGO Movie has grossed a very impressive $75.68 million in its first five days of release. The film continues to exceed expectations in a big way and is currently running just 2 percent behind the $77.38 million five-day start of 2012's The Lorax (which increased 5 percent on its first Tuesday to gross $3.67 million). With the aid of strong word of mouth, strong critical reviews and no new family films entering the marketplace this weekend, The LEGO Movie should hold up very well over the holiday frame.

Sony's The Monuments Men held steady in second place with $2.05 million. The George Clooney directed World War II film was up a healthy 26 percent over Monday's take. The Monuments Men is currently performing towards the higher end of pre-release expectations with a five-day start of $25.67 million. That places the film 73 percent ahead of the $14.84 million five-day start of 2009's The Men Who Stare at Goats and 45 percent behind the $46.98 million five-day take of 2009's Inglourious Basterds.

Universal's Ride Along took in $0.58 million to remain in third place. The break-out action comedy starring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube was up 3 percent over Monday and down 32 percent from last Tuesday. The 26-day total for Ride Along stands at $106.45 million. Ride Along could begin to lose some steam this coming weekend with Sony's About Last Night (also starring Hart) being released on Friday.

That Awkward Moment was up two spots and a strong 31 percent over Monday to move into fourth on Tuesday with $0.47 million. The low-budget comedy from Focus starring Zac Efron was down 39 percent from last Tuesday. Thanks in part to better than usual holding power for an Efron vehicle, That Awkward Moment has grossed a so-so $17.38 million through twelve days of release.
