Paramount reports that Transformers: Age of Extinction retained the top spot on Wednesday in the face of three new wide openers. The Michael Bay sequel posted another $7.73 million, off 26 percent from Tuesday, to give it a 6-day domestic cume of $128.7 million. The fourth film in the franchise is pacing 29 percent behind its predecessor, 2011's Dark of the Moon, and 3 percent ahead of X-Men: Days of Future Past.
Warner Bros. reports that Tammy came in second place for its opening day on Wednesday with $6.2 million. That's not far behind the $6.78 million of last August's We're The Millers for its Wednesday bow. The Melissa McCarthy comedy is hoping that Fourth of July weekend will see a strong turnout from adult crowds.
Sony's Deliver Us From Evil claimed third place on opening day with $2.855 million. That's a modest start for another 2014 horror pic, especially compared to the $$4.97 million opening Friday of April's Oculus. Although horror fans haven't had much to choose from at cinemas this year, it's likely that their attention is more geared toward July 18's The Purge: Anarchy.
Relativity's Earth to Echo debuted to $2.65 million yesterday. The low-budget flick aimed toward families and pre-teens is hoping to counter-program against the market's major offerings in Transformers 4, How to Train Your Dragon 2, and Maleficent over the upcoming weekend.
22 Jump Street banked another $1.97 million yesterday for a 44 percent week-to-week drop. The comedy sequel's take thus far is $146.97 million.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 was reportedly just $55 behind the Jump Street sequel with a similar $1.97 million on Wednesday, off 44 percent from the same day last week. The animated sequel's domestic tally is $128.8 million through 20 days of release.
Meanwhile, Dinesh D'Souza's America took in $0.65 million in its wide expansion to 1,105 theaters on Wednesday. The domestic total stands at $0.692 million. The filmmaker previously sent 2016 Obama's America to notable success two summers ago, although its release and expansion occurred later that summer.
