Massive $258.1M for 'American Sniper' After Three Weeks of Wide Release

Warner's American Sniper took in $2.51 million on Thursday to lead the daily box office for a 21st consecutive day. The blockbuster Clint Eastwood directed film starring Bradley Cooper was up 10 percent over Wednesday and down 32 percent from last Thursday. While American Sniper took a clear hit from the Super Bowl this week, it still dominated the box office with ease over the weekly frame with $41.01 million. That was down 50 percent from the previous week and brings the film's domestic total to a massive $258.10 million. American Sniper surpassed the $257.76 million final gross of The LEGO Movie yesterday to become the fourth highest grossing release of 2014 thus far domestically. The film is set to surpass the $259.77 million gross of Captain America: The Winter Soldier today to move into third place.

Relativity's Black or White held steady in second place with $0.571 million. The drama starring Kevin Costner and Octavia Spencer was up a promising 9 percent over Wednesday. Black or White placed in fourth for the week with a seven-day start of $8.60 million. The film debuted towards the higher end of its modest pre-release expectations and displayed healthy holding power throughout most of the week.

The Imitation Game was up two spots and a strong 16 percent over Wednesday to place in third on Thursday with $0.541 million. The Best Picture nominee from The Weinstein Company placed in seventh for the week with $7.08 million. That was down just 24 percent from the previous week and brings the film's domestic total to $69.86 million.

Sony's The Wedding Ringer was down one spot and 4 percent from Wednesday to land in fourth on Thursday with $0.474 million. In the process, the modestly budgeted comedy starring Kevin Hart and Josh Gad surpassed the $50 million mark yesterday. The Wedding Ringer claimed sixth place for the week with $7.83 million and has grossed a solid $50.28 million in 21 days.

The Boy Next Door was down one spot from Wednesday to round out Thursday's top five with $0.469 million. Universal's low-budget thriller starring Jennifer Lopez was essentially unchanged from Wednesday's performance. The Boy Next Door took fifth place for the week with $8.16 million. That was down 56 percent from the previous frame and brings the film's two-week total to $26.75 million.

Project Almanac rounded out its first week of release with a sixth place take of $0.418 million. The low-budget sci-fi thriller from Paramount was down 5 percent from Wednesday. Project Almanac debuted in second place for the week with a significantly softer than expected $10.43 million in its first seven days. The film also showed signs of initial front-loading throughout the week.
