'In the Heart of the Sea' Leads Slow Monday with $1.05M; 'Mockingjay – Part 2' a Close Second with $1.02M; 'Creed' Passes $80M Mark After $0.87M Daily Take

Warner's In the Heart of the Sea moved into first place on Monday with $1.05 million. The pricey Ron Howard directed adventure drama starring Chris Hemsworth was down just 63 percent from Sunday. However, in the bigger picture In the Heart of the Sea continues to disappoint in a big way with a four-day start of $12.11 million. That places the film a lackluster 54 percent behind the $26.09 million four-day take of last year's Exodus: Gods and Kings (which fell 67 percent on its first Monday to gross $1.97 million). With Disney's Star Wars: The Force Awakens soon entering the marketplace, In the Heart of the Sea and holdovers in general are highly likely to experience sharp declines this coming weekend.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 placed in a very close second with $1.02 million. The final chapter of Lionsgate's young adult blockbuster franchise trailed In the Heart of the Sea by a slim $30,846 for the day. Mockingjay - Part 2 was down 67 percent from Sunday and down 25 percent from last Monday. With a 25-day gross of $245.63 million, Mockingjay - Part 2 is running 12 percent behind the $278.00 million 25-day take of last year's The Huger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1.

Warner and MGM's Creed claimed third place with $0.868 million. The critically acclaimed seventh installment of the Rocky franchise declined 67 percent from Sunday and just 20 percent from last Monday. Creed surpassed the $80 million mark yesterday and continues to exceed expectations with a 20-day take of $80.19 million. That places the film a healthy 31 percent ahead of the $61.04 million 20-day gross of 2006's Rocky Balboa.

Universal's Krampus followed in fourth with $0.613 million. The modestly budgeted holiday themed PG-13 horror film fell 72 percent from Sunday and 37 percent from last Monday. Krampus has grossed $29.18 million in eleven days. That is ahead of pre-release expectations and places the film just below the $29.82 million eleven-day take of 2013's Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas.

The Good Dinosaur rounded out Monday's top with $0.606 million. The 3D computer animated film from Disney and Pixar was down 81 percent from Sunday and down only 17 percent from last Monday. The Good Dinosaur surpassed the $90 million mark on Monday and has grossed a softer than expected $90.08 million in 20 days. The film is currently running an underwhelming 22.5 percent behind the $116.27 million 20-day gross of 2010's Tangled.

On the platform front, Paramount's The Big Short remained strong with $66,330 from 8 locations. That gave the Adam McKay directed ensemble comedy-drama an impressive per-location average of $8,291 for the day. Thanks in part to its strong cast, strong critical reviews and awards season buzz, The Big Short has grossed $771,857 through four days of platform release. Based on its performance so far, The Big Short looks to be in good shape for its scheduled wide release on Wednesday, December 23.
