The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 returned to first place on Wednesday with $1.03 million. The final chapter of Lionsgate's young adult blockbuster franchise declined just 18 percent from Tuesday and 25 percent from last Wednesday. Mockingjay - Part 2 has grossed $247.91 million in 27 days. The film is currently running 12 percent behind the $280.39 million 27-day take of last year's The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1.

After leading the daily box office for each of the previous two days, Warner's In the Heart of the Sea fell to second on Tuesday with $0.937 million. The pricey Ron Howard directed adventure drama starring Chris Hemsworth fell a sharp 31 percent from Tuesday's performance. In the Heart of the Sea has grossed a disappointing $14.41 million in six days of release. That places the film a lackluster 51 percent behind the $29.61 million six-day launch of last year's Exodus: Gods and Kings.

Warner and MGM's Creed remained in third place with $0.847 million. The critically acclaimed seventh installment of the Rocky franchise was down 20 percent from Tuesday and down only 20.5 percent from last Wednesday. Creed continues to exceed expectations with a 22-day take of $82.10 million. The film is running a healthy 33 percent ahead of the $61.87 million 22-day gross of 2006's Rocky Balboa.

The Good Dinosaur held steady in fourth place with $0.662 million. The 3D computer animated film from Disney and Pixar declined 25 percent from Tuesday and a slim 18 percent from last Wednesday. The Good Dinosaur has grossed a softer than expected $91.63 million in 22 days, which places the film an underwhelming 22 percent behind the $118.14 million 22-day gross of 2010's Tangled.

Universal's Krampus continued to round out the daily top five with $0.598 million. The modestly budgeted holiday themed PG-13 horror film fell 23 percent from Tuesday and 29 percent from last Wednesday. Krampus surpassed the $30 million domestic mark yesterday and has grossed a stronger than expected $30.55 million in thirteen days.

On the platform front, Paramount's The Big Short took in $59,655 from 8 locations. The Adam McKay directed ensemble comedy-drama continued to impress with a per-location average of $7,457 for the day. The Big Short has grossed a very encouraging $889,861 through six days of platform release. The film will continue to play in 8 locations this weekend and will playing in 2,300 locations beginning on Wednesday, December 23.
