'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Destroys More Records with $38.1 Million on Wednesday

on December 24, 2015 by BoxOffice Staff

Please note that some studios are closed for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Grosses for Wednesday, Dec. 23 are a mix of estimates and actuals.

Disney reports this morning that Star Wars: The Force Awakens added another $38.1 million to its domestic haul on Wednesday, giving the film a staggering six-day gross of $363.5 million -- besting Jurassic World's previous record take of $278.4 million in the same time frame by nearly 31 percent.

The Force Awakens also broke yet another record yesterday as the best Wednesday gross in history for a non-opening day. The previous record belonged to 2007's original Transformers, which earned $29.1 million in its second day of release.

Yesterday marked a 2 percent increase from Tuesday's record gross as the film continues to closely follow the daily hold pattern of current all-time box office champ Avatar. Needless to say, Star Wars' performance thus far is beyond remarkable as it will easily become the fastest film to reach $400 million domestically early in its eighth day of release on Friday -- more than two days quicker than Jurassic World.

With what looks to be a record-breaking second weekend around $160-170 million, The Force Awakens will already have topped $500 million before the end of a busy Christmas weekend (it took Jurassic World 17 days to achieve that feat).

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip held steady in second place with $3.41 million. The fourth installment of Fox's animated live-action hybrid franchise fell 16 percent from Tuesday. The Road Chip has grossed $24.68 million in six days, which places the film 25 percent behind the $32.97 million six-day start of 2011's Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked.

Universal's Sisters took in $2.49 million to remain in third. The R-rated comedy starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler declined 14 percent from Tuesday. Sisters has grossed a very solid $21.83 million in six days. The film is running 5 percent ahead of the $20.78 million six-day take of This Is 40. Both Sisters and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip are very likely to hold up well throughout the holiday season.

In its first day of wide release, Paramount's The Big Short took fourth place with an estimated $2.31 million. The critically acclaimed Adam McKay directed film registered a healthy daily per-location average of $1,456 from 1,585 locations. Yesterday's gross for The Big Short was 34 percent stronger than the $1.73 million Up in the Air grossed on its first day of wide release (which fell on the Wednesday before Christmas back in 2009). Up in the Air took in $11.27 million over Christmas weekend, so the comparison is a very promising one for The Big Short as it heads into the holiday weekend.

In other box office news, The Good Dinosaur passed the $100 million domestic mark on Wednesday after taking in $1.32 million for the day. The 3D computer animated film from Disney and Pixar reached the milestone in 29 days. The 29-day total for The Good Dinosaur stands at a softer than expected $100.66 million.

With many studios closed for the holidays, estimates will continue to be the general extent of reporting over the next few days. Follow BoxOffice for continued updates on Star Wars' unprecedented run.
