Long Range Forecast: 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides'

Featured Stories - on March 26, 2011 by Phil Contrino

onstrangertidesforecast.pngWe've added one new film to the Long Range Forecast this week. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is set to hit theaters on May 20.

On Stranger Tides represents a big test for star Johnny Depp. Without having Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley leading the way he'll have to carry the movie almost entirely on his own. He will get a nice bit of support from Penelope Cruz, but Cruz is not quite a reliable draw. We're betting he's up to the task.

Another reason for slight concern is the fact that the franchise has switched directors from Gore Verbinski to Rob Marshall. Marshall is famous for musicals like Chicago and Nine, so there's a chance he may stumble a bit with a big-budget action flick. Yet even if Marshall stumbles, Disney has established a billion-dollar property in its Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and we're betting that there's still plenty more money to be made. Expect a substantial haul.
