Weekend Predictions: 'House at the End of the Street,' 'Trouble with the Curve,' 'End of Watch' and 'Dredd 3D'

921predictions.pngFour new releases will try to steal the #1 spot from Resident Evil: Retribution this coming weekend.

House at the End of the Street and Trouble with the Curve will have to fight it out for the top spot. Both films look strong and either one could ultimately win the weekend.

Clint Eastwood was supposed to quit acting after Gran Torino. He lied. The Warner Bros. release proved that the veteran thesp is still a draw: it grossed $269.5 million worldwide. Now Eastwood returns in full crotchety mode with Trouble with the Curve. Even if the octogenarian did turn off a lot of Democrats with his speech at the Republican convention, Curve looks poised to some serious damage. The combination of Eastwood and baseball has "can't miss" written all over it.

Look for Trouble with the Curve to take in $18.5 million during its debut frame.

Relativity is hoping to cash in on Jennifer Lawrence's popularity with House at the End of the Street. Lawrence commands a loyal fanbase after The Hunger Games in the same way that Twilight fans have followed Kristen Stewart around. The film itself looks like a pretty routine horror flick, but Lawrence's name adds more appeal.

House at the End of the Street should manage $18 million this coming weekend.

Jake Gyllenhaal abandons his wholesome image in order to take on a world full of grit and violence in End of Watch. When cop dramas hit, they really hit. Unfortunately, this Open Road release will have to face too much competition from House at the End of the Street and Trouble with the Curve, so it's bound to be overshadowed.

End of Watch looks poised for a $12 million debut.

The good news for Dredd 3D is that early reviews are pretty positive. The bad news is that it's aimed at the same audience that just lined up for Resident Evil: Retribution last weekend. There's only so much room at the box office for bleak sci-fi, and Dredd will suffer as a result.

Dredd should grab $8.5 million during its first frame.
