Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E and other members of N.W.A. get the biopic treatment in Straight Outta Compton. Will the drama become another successful true-life tale or will it be overshadowed by Summer blockbusters? BoxOffice takes a closer look at the commercial prospects.

Straight Outta Compton
(Universal)

PROS:

- Reactions to the first trailer were overwhelmingly positive. The red-band version generated a lot of buzz.
- 2015 is a massive year for Universal, and we are confident that their marketing campaign will continue to connect in a big way.
- We think that the $20.5 million opening weekend that Notorious managed in 2009 is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of what rap biopics can accomplish.
- Ice Cube and Dr. Dre are not shying away from aggressively promoting the film.

CONS:

- Notorious was very front-loaded: it earned only $36.8 million total after an impressive debut. We're hoping the same problem doesn't hurt Straight Outta Compton
