China Spotlight: Foreign Films Dominate Box Office
on October 16, 2012
Taken 2 is the #1 film in China for the week of October 8-October 14. The action flick grabbed another $9 million for a healthy cume of $11.1 million. China is the fifth largest foreign territory for Taken 2 behind the UK, Australia, France and South Korea.
Bait 3D debuted to $7.9 million this week in China. The American film starring Julian McMahon (Nip/Tuck) received a straight-to-DVD/Blu-ray release on September 18 in North America.
In third place, China's Tai Chi 0 grabbed another $3.2 million for a cume of $21.2 million. The martial arts flick opens in North America on October 19. Taichi 0 received mixed reviews after playing the Toronto International Film Festival this year. Noel Murray of the AV Club gave it a B saying that, "the story's fundamentals are solid, and the battles between this village of kung fu experts and an army of 19th century technophiles are so good that the inevitable sequel (already in the works) will be welcome, as will the future martial arts movies that [Taichi 0] might inspire."
China's Double Xposure finished in fourth place with $2.9 million, pushing its cume to $16 million. No North American release is currently planned for the dark and brooding film about betrayal, revenge and murder.
Looper rounds out the top 5 with another $2.5 million for a cume of $19.3 million.
