Monday Update: Digiplex Destinations has announced that they are closing locations in New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut on Monday because of Hurricane Sandy. The theater chain made the announcement on their Facebook page on Monday morning.
Make sure to follow MovieTickets.com and Fandango on Twitter for updates about specific theaters.
Sunday Update: AMC closed more than a dozen theaters in New York City and Long Island starting at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday in preparation for the impact of Hurricane Sandy. Regal, which has nine theaters in New York City, will close by 9 p.m. ET. Both chains will keep those locations closed on Monday. Clearview Cinemas, City Cinemas and Angelika Film Center also closed. Public transportation in New York City stopped as of 7 p.m. ET.
The hurricane is likely to have a huge impact not only on box office grosses in New York—the 2nd largest market in the country after Los Angeles—but also in other lucrative East Coast territories such as Washington D.C., New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. This is not good news for a crop of newcomers—Cloud Atlas, Silent Hill: Revelation, Fun Size and Chasing Mavericks—that started off on a bad note during what turned out to be a very lackluster weekend. Argo, the weekend's #1 film, will rebound quickly once theaters open again. Ben Affleck's latest directorial effort is now a must-see that no hurricane can stop.
The official announcement from AMC is below. Updates can be found here.
Hurricane Sandy is slowly moving up the east coast. Meteorologists speculate that the storm will make landfall near the Delaware coast Monday night and then possibly combine with 2 other winter storms creating a hybrid "Superstorm." Theatres along coast are preparing for heavy rain, high winds, and potential snowfall. In advance of the storms, the New York Metro Transit Authority plans to suspend service after 7:00 pm tonight. In the interest of keeping both our guests and our crew members safe, several theatres will be closing early and planning to stay closed through Monday.
Affected AMC Theatres:
The theatres listed below will close after the last showtime before 3 pm to give associates and guests the proper amount of time to get home before the suspension of NYC MTA service.
