lesmis.pngLes Miserables is off to a great start in Japan. The musical has an estimated $4.2 million in the bank from 348 dates. Paid previews begin in Korea, Hong Kong and Australia this weekend. From Universal: "[Les Miserables] is No. 1 [in Japan] of the Hollywood films and well ahead of the competition with 46% market share among those films. It is No. 2 overall just behind a local animated film. Our opening is bigger than opening weekends of MAMMA MIA! (¥350M), THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (¥340M) and last weekend's opening of THE HOBBIT (¥292M). Audiences are applauding during the end credits in Tokyo, which is a rare occurrence in this market. LES MIS results in Korea are outstanding. It is No. 1 in the market and bigger than the opening weekends of MAMMA MIA! and THE HOBBIT. Spontaneous applause at the end of the film is being reported across Korea as well. Limited paid previews in Australia (one day and one evening session on Sat. and Sun.) and Hong Kong are doing great. We are off to strong starts in all four of these markets and we have great holiday playtime ahead of us. Paid preview grosses for Korea, Australia and Hong Kong will be reported when the film officially opens in these markets this week. We open in the U.S. and Canada, Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Spain on Tues., Dec. 25 followed by Australia on Dec. 26 and Hungary on Dec. 27. The rest of the international will release in 2013 including the U.K. and Ireland on Jan. 11."
