UPDATED GLOBAL: 'Man of Steel' Grosses Above $5M in China Debut

on June 13, 2013

FRIDAY UPDATE: Film Business Asia is reporting big opening day numbers for Man of Steel in China. The Superman reboot took in $5.58 million from its opening day and an additional $388k from midnight screenings. The early total is below the blockbuster $17 million opening day of Iron Man 3

MONDAY UPDATE: Revised figures from Warner Brothers indicate that Man of Steel broke the $200 million mark over the weekend. The North American debut for the Superman reboot exceeded expectations by taking in $128.7 million, up from Sunday's $125 million estimate.

The overseas grosses also came in higher than originally reported. New figures from Warner Brothers point to a $73.3 million debut for Man of Steel outside of North America. The Superman reboot grossed $202.1 million worldwide in its opening weekend.

SUNDAY REPORT: Warner Brothers is reporting a $71.6 million take from 24 overseas markets for Man of Steel, bringing the Superman reboot to a $196.6 million opening weekend on the global stage.

Man of Steel is lined up to overtake the franchise's previous attempt to rebrand itself, Bryan Singer's Superman Returns from 2006. Superman Returns grossed $200 million in North America and $191 million overseas for a $391 million global cume.

The $125 million brought in by Man of Steel in its North American debut opened the gate for one of the summer's hottest premieres. The film broke the record for the biggest June opening of all time in North America, running away with a $29,731 average from 4,207 locations. Man of Steel has proved popular with audiences' tastes as well, boasting an A- CinemaScore that suggests staying power at the North American box office.

IMAX confirmed a $13.3 million global take from 331 locations around the world, making Man of Steel the highest June opening in history for an IMAX release. The opening day IMAX gross for the film overseas was $4.2 million from 79 screens, also a June record. The estimated weekend global total for Man of Steel in IMAX theaters is expected to be $17.5 million.

The early overseas numbers from individual territories are also indicating a strong start abroad for the superhero film. Warner Brothers rolled out Man of Steel day-and-date in only three major global markets: the United Kingdom, Mexico, and South Korea.

Man of Steel is claiming a $17.1 million opening weekend from the United Kingdom, comparable to the great debut Iron Man 3 earlier this summer. Superman's latest big screen adventure became the third highest Warner Brothers opening weekend in Mexico with a $9.8 million take. South Korea rounded out the top markets for the superhero film, bringing in $8.8 million.

The first overseas territory to report numbers was the Philippines, posting an extraordinary $1,657,532 opening day gross across 466 screens on Wednesday to become the biggest opening day performance in the country's history. The Superman reboot recorded 347,626 admissions in its first day in the Philippines and took over 90% of the market share. It went on become the highest Warner Brothers opening weekend in the territory with a $5.6 million take despite monsoon weather conditions.

India came in with a $3.5 million opening weekend, making it WB's second largest opening there behind The Dark Knight Rises. Malaysia added another $3 million to the overseas cume and the film posted the biggest opening weekend for a WB release in the United Arab Emirates with a $2 million gross.

Man of Steel is slated to open in an additional 26 markets next weekend, including China, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, and Spain. Australia will see a June 27 premiere for the Superman film. It will also open in Brazil on July 12 and Japan on August 30.
