JAPAN: Superman Debut Takes a Back Seat to Miyazaki

The famed anime filmmaker announced his retirement last week, making The Wind Rises the last film in his oeuvre. The Wind Rises has had a blockbuster run in Japan since its July 20 premiere, collecting a total of $90 million. This weekend's $3.4 million take pushed the film above Monsters University's $87.6 million cume. Man of Steel scored a $2.7 million opening weekend, reaching. $3.4 million bow once previews are factored in. The Superman reboot averaged $4,481 from 610 screens.
