SUNDAY ESTIMATES: The 300 franchise enjoyed a great weekend overseas with the release of 300: Rise of an Empire in 58 markets. The film took a commanding $87.8 million debut since its initial mid-week roll-out with nearly 12.1 million admissions on 14,478 screens, tracking ahead of its predecessor by 10%.
The film posted a healthy haul from IMAX screens, setting a new March record with $5.2 million from 179 screens. The previous record holder in March was John Carter, with a figure under $4 million. Top overseas IMAX performers include the Netherlands ($63k per-screen average), France ($55k PSA), and South Korea ($43k). The film will finish the weekend with a $12 million IMAX global cume, the second best result for a March results behind Alice in Wonderland.
Russia leads new openers with a $9.2 million bow from 1,441 screens, finishing as the top film at the box office with a dominant 45% market share.
France enjoyed a $7.2 million debut with 681k admissions from 454 screens (including previews) and registered the top per-screen average in one of the world's most diverse and competitive markets.
Rise of an Empire claimed first place in South Korea with a $6.5 million debut from 720 screens.
The film opened to $5.8 million (including previews) from 795 screens in Brazil, becoming the industry's biggest March opening of all time in the country. It also marks the fourth highest 16-rated opener for Warner Bros. in Brazil.
Mexico took off with $5.5 million from 2,047 screens.
Germany enjoyed a $5.3 million debut from 582 screens (including previews), claiming 44% of the top 5 market share.
The United Kingdom posted a first place finish with $4.8 million from 955 screens, also taking 44% of the top 5 market share.
Spain responded with a #1 finish after grossing $3.7 million from 611 screens and capturing 54% of the top 5 market share.
Italy opened in first place with $3.4 million from 471 screens.
Rise of an Empire took a robust $3 million opening from 894 screens in India, the third biggest opener of all time for Warner Bros. in the market and the fourth biggest debut for an MPA film.
Australia brought in $2.8 million from 467 screens, finishing the weekend in first place.
The film posted the second biggest opening of all-time for an 18-rated Warner Bros. film in the United Arab Emirates after collecting $1.4 million from 61 screens, garnering 65% of the top 5 market share.
300: Rise of an Empire finished its day-and-date global debut with $132.8 million. The film will open in Japan on June 20.
Mr. Peabody & Sherman expanded to 36 new markets over the weekend, taking $21 million from 10,742 screens across a total of 52 markets.
Mr. Peabody & Sherman has grossed $66 million overseas and $98.5 million globally. The film posted a strong opening in Russia despite facing off head-to-head against the new 300 film. Mr. Peabody & Sherman claimed second place in Russia with a $4.4 million debut from 2,016 screens, 60% ahead of the opening figure for The LEGO Movie. Spain also posted a strong second place finish in the shadow of 300, earning $2.1 million from 539 screens.
Top hold-overs for the animated film include Mexico ($1.54M Weekend / 1,105 Screens / $4.9M Cume), Germany ($1.53M Weekend / 956 Screens / $4.6M Cume), France ($1.3M Weekend / 1,111 Screens / $8M Cume), and Brazil ($1.2M Weekend / 617 Screens / $4.8M Cume).
Warner Bros. continued its great weekend abroad with a $9.9 million haul from over 5,300 screens for The LEGO Movie. The animated film has now grossed a total of $135.6 million overseas and $360.5 million worldwide.
Top markets for The LEGO Movie include the United Kingdom ($47.7M), France ($10M), Mexico ($9.6M), Spain ($6.4M), Russia ($5.6M), and Brazil ($5.5M). The film will expand to Australia on April 3 and Germany on April 10.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is still thriving in China. The Desolation of Smaug reached a running total of $67.1 million in the market, surpassing the $50.7 million lifetime run of An Unexpected Journey by 29%. Japan is also tracking ahead of the film's predecessor with a $7.6 million total after its second weekend, 22% ahead of An Unexpected Journey over the same timeframe.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has grossed $680 million overseas and $937.7 million globally.
12 Years a Slave received an overseas box office boost after winning the Academy Award for Best Picture last weekend. The film brought in an additional $9.1 million over the weekend to lift its overseas cume above $100 million and reach a $105.5 million total outside of North America.
The historical drama claimed a $500k debut from 43 screens in Japan and saw a bump in business in Mexico ($1M Weekend / $3.5M Cume), the U.K. ($757k Weekend / $32.2M Cume), Germany ($513k Weekend / $5.7M Cume), Spain ($413k Weekend / $7.5M Cume). Italy also posted strong hold-over numbers with a $1.1 million weekend, bringing its local cume up to $4.9 million.
The Grand Budapest Hotel brought in $6.2 million from 772 screens in 9 markets, marking the biggest debut for a Wes Anderson film in the United Kingdom ($2.6M / 285 Screens), Germany ($1.1M / $163 Screens), Austria ($162k / 29 Screens), and Belgium ($155k / 12 Screens). France posted a strong hold in its second weekend, finishing in fourth place with $1.6 million from 192 screens and a $5.1 million cume.
The Grand Budapest Hotel has already broken the $10 million overseas mark after only two weekends and 9 markets. The film posted a strong opening in limited release in North America, grossing $800k from only four screens, to bring its worldwide total up to $10.8 million.
Pompeii added $6.1 million from 50 markets over the weekend to reach a $57.1 million overseas total. The film posted strong holds in Russia ($950k Weekend / $10.7M Cume), South Korea ($789k Weekend / $9.2M Cume), and France ($589k Weekend / $5.8M Cume). Pompeii has grossed $78.1 million worldwide.
The Monuments Men earned $3.7 million from 7,329 screens in 53 markets. Monuments Men has grossed $45.5 million overseas and $116.1 million worldwide. The film will expand to Australia, Belgium, and France next weekend.
Frozen collected $3.6 million in its sixteenth weekend overseas, boosting its overseas total to $616.4 million. The Academy Award winning animated film has grossed $1.009 billion worldwide, including key performances from South Korea ($76.3M), the United Kingdom ($63.8M), Germany ($47.9M), China ($46.1M), France ($42.6M), Russia ($33.3M), and Australia ($30.8M).
Ride Along rode its way to a $10 million overseas total after earning $1.8 million at 538 dates in 11 territories. The film opened in sixth place in the Netherlands with a $173k bow at 38 dates. The United Kingdom posted a strong hold in the United Kingdom, where it followed last weekend's opening with a $1.5 million mid-table finish at 385 dates to reach a 10-day total of $4.9 million. Ride Along has grossed $140 million worldwide. The film has six territories left on its agenda, including Australia and Hungary on March 20.
The Book Thief stole another $1.6 million from 1,094 screens in 16 markets. The film has grossed a total of $44.3 million overseas and $65.6 million globally.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit added $1 million from approximately 1,230 cinemas in 28 markets over the weekend, bringing the film's overseas total to $83.7 million. Germany delivered $624k from 443 sites, a 45% slide from last weekend, to reach a $2.1 million market total. Japan earned $150k from 333 cinemas to reach a $4.7 million total. Jack Ryan has grossed $133.8 million worldwide.
Endless Love didn't have a lasting effect with international audiences. The film took $500k at 400 dates in territories over the weekend to reach a $7.6 million overseas total. Endless Love has grossed $30.7 million worldwide. The film opened in ninth place in Russia with $305k at 308 dates. Endless Love will be released in South Korea on March 13 and Bulgaria on March 14.
