The Amazing Spider-Man 2 led the way on Monday with $5.17 million. The expensive second film in Sony's re-launched superhero franchise was down 78 percent from Sunday's performance; a sure sign of the significant size of the film's family audience. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has grossed $96.78 million through four days of release. That is towards the lower end of pre-release expectations and leaves the film just $3.22 million away from reaching the $100 million domestic milestone, a milestone the film is set to surpass today. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is currently running 0.6 percent ahead of the $96.16 million four-day start of last year's Thor: The Dark World and 4.4 percent behind the recent $101.24 million four-day take of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Fox's The Other Woman held steady in second place with $1.04 million. The modestly budgeted comedy starring Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton was down 70 percent from Sunday and down 46 percent from last Monday. The Other Woman continues to outpace expectations with an eleven-day take of $48.59 million. That places the film 16 percent ahead of the $41.82 million eleven-day gross of 2008's What Happens in Vegas. The Other Woman film will soon face new competition when Universal releases Neighbors on Friday.
Heaven is for Real claimed third place with $0.600 million on Monday. Sony's break-out faith-based drama was down77 percent from Sunday and down 41 percent from last Monday. Heaven is for Real continues to distance itself significantly from expectations with a very strong $66.10 million through 20 days of release.
Disney's Captain America: The Winter Soldier placed in fourth with $0.511 million. The blockbuster superhero sequel fell 76 percent from Sunday and 52 percent from last Monday. Captain America: The Winter Soldier continues to impress in a big way with a 32-day take of $237.67 million. That leaves the film just $12.33 million away from clearing the $250 million domestic mark.
Rio 2 rounded out the day's top five with $0.338 million. The computer animated sequel was down 86 percent from Sunday and down 41 percent from last Monday. The 25-day total for Rio 2 stands at a very solid $106.92 million.
