'22 Jump Street' Bullish, 'Dragon 2' Quietly Impresses

Wednesday Morning Update: 22 Jump Street rose 36% to 79,925 tweets on Tuesday, up from 58,612 tweets on Monday. The numbers are now entering into ridiculous territory (well even more into) and it is clearly resonating well with not only a broad spectrum of males but also young women thanks to Mr. Tatum. These numbers far eclipse the biggest numbers of either of its star's past films including The Vow and Magic Mike. It is also getting a very strong multi-channeled marketing push which has seen it take off in recent weeks. Considering that the first trailer failed to even generate 7,000 tweets back in December, then its second Red Band trailer nabbed 45,000 in April, to the 50k numbers it is throwing up now in its week of release it has shown remarkable expansion in awareness over the past few months, a great deal of which can be linked to its marketing spend. 23 Jump Street can't be far behind, hell if they made a Hangover 3 then they better make a threequel here.
How To Train Your Dragon 2 had a more modest increase on Tuesday as it rang in with 8,549 tweets, up 17% from Monday's 7,278 tweets. By comparison, How To Train Your Dragon had 1,701 tweets its Tuesday before release while The LEGO Movie had 14,586, and Rio 2 had 6,814. I was actually hoping to see it closer to LEGO but even at its present levels $60 million+ seems to be a lock though too much more might be a stretch unless it really picks up its game today (which isn't looking likely as I type this).
Dumb And Dumber To debuted its first trailer yesterday and rode a wave of nostalgia to just over 11,000 tweets. This is a really strong number for a comedy first trailer, even for sequels. By comparison, the first trailer for Anchorman 2 had 12,404 tweets back in May of last year while 22 Jump Street didn't even hit 7,000 tweets as I mentioned earlier. Looks like Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are set to roll back the clock and recapture some of the glory of the first film.
