GLOBAL REPORT: 'Star Wars' Hits $1 Billion in 12 Days, 'Peanuts Movie' Shines in Expansion, 'Good Dinosaur' Crosses $200M Mark

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Crosses $1 Billion Worldwide in Record Time

It only took 12 days for Star Wars: The Force Awakens to join the billion dollar club. The film grossed $153.5 million in North America and $133.3 million overseas in its second weekend to reach the set a new record time to achieve the billion dollar benchmark. Notably, without the help of China at this point in its release, where the film won't debut until January 9.

The film is now the #2 movie of 2015 in North America and #5 film of all time at the domestic box office. Internationally, it is the #6 film of the year. Globally, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the #5 film of the year and #15 release of all time.

IMAX contributed $27.5 million from 673 screens worldwide, crossing the $100 million mark in the format in record time as well. The previous record holder, Jurassic World, crossed $100 million in IMAX after 18 days in release with the help of China. Star Wars: The Force Awakens has grossed a total of $106 million globally from IMAX screens.

The film posted the biggest Boxing Day of all time in the UK on Saturday and has already grossed a total of $97.2 million in the market after only 10 days in release, the biggest overseas market for the film at this point and making it the #9 film of all time in the United Kingdom.

Other top performers for Star Wars: The Force Awakens overseas include Germany (54.3M), France ($47.8M), Australia ($35.7M), Japan ($31.3M), Mexico ($20.2M), Spain ($19.9M), South Korea ($18.8M), Italy ($18.2M), Russia ($18M), Brazil ($15.9M), and Sweden ($10.9M).

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has grossed a total of $546 million overseas and $1.090 billion worldwide.

Snoopy had a good weekend, helping The Peanuts Movie bring in $25 million from 49 markets. The film registered Fox's second biggest opening of 2015 in Mexico with $3.1 million from 1,900 screens. UK opened in second place with $5.5 million from 750 screens. The film has now grossed $45 million outside of North America with 14 additional markets scheduled within the next two weeks. The Peanuts Movie has grossed $172.6 million globally.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip opened in 13 markets over the weekend, finishing its overseas debut with $8.1 million. Brazil was the biggest debut of the weekend with a $2.7 million bow from 946 screens, followed by Italy ($1.7M, 420 screens) and Australia ($1.1M, 255 screens). The film has grossed $47.5 million worldwide.

The Good Dinosaur grossed $1.8 million from its debut in Australia en route to an $8 million overseas frame from 51 territories. UK leads overseas markets with a $14.9 million total, followed by France ($12.8M), Mexico ($11.6M), Spain ($7.9M), Italy ($6.1M), Argentina ($6M), Russia ($5M), and Germany ($4.4M). South Korea and Brazil are yet to premiere and are schedule for January 7. The Good Dinosaur has grossed a total of $109 million overseas and $214.3 million worldwide.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 grossed $6.4 million from 78 markets overseas this weekend. The film has grossed a total of $352.2 million outside of North America and $616.8 million worldwide. Top markets include the UK ($40.9M), Germany ($40.5M), China ($22.3M), Venezuela ($20.9M), and Australia ($20.1M).

SPECTRE grossed $5.6 million from 68 markets over the weekend, taking its overseas tally up to $653.9 million. Top markets for the James Bond film are led by the UK ($143.8M), China ($84.7M), Germany ($67.8M), France ($37.4M), and Australia ($24.2M). SPECTRE has grossed $850.1 million worldwide.

Hotel Transylvania 2 grossed $5 million from 47 markets, reaching a $288.2 million overseas cume. Top performing markets include the UK ($30.2M), Mexico ($23.9M), Venezuela ($23.9M), China ($18.7M), Russia ($17.7M), and France ($16.1M). The film has grossed $456 million worldwide.

Bridge of Spies made $4.7 million from 15 markets, lifting its overseas cume to $67 million. The film has grossed $137 million worldwide.

Daddy's Home opened day-and-date in 4 markets this weekend, grossing $4.4 million outside of North America and $43.2 million globally. The film's $2.5 million bow in the UK was the top performer, followed by a $1.8 million debut in Australia. The film expands to Egypt, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam before 2016.

In the Heart of the Sea fished out another $2.6 million from 55 markets over the weekend. The film has grossed a total of $53.8 million overseas. South Korea is leading all overseas markets with a $5.8 million cume, followed by Mexico ($5.6M), Russia ($4.8M), Italy ($4.6M), and Brazil ($3.9M). The film has grossed $76.1 million globally.

Joy opened day-and-date in 8 overseas markets, taking $2 million from 693 screens outside of North America. Australia posted the biggest debut with a $1.2 million take. The film expands to 23 additional markets next weekend. Joy's global tally is $19.5 million in its first weekend of release.

Krampus grossed $1.5 million in 43 territories, including a $195k debut at 80 dates in Panama. The film has grossed a total of $15.4 million overseas and $55.9 million worldwide.

The Big Short opened in 303 locations in France over the weekend, grossing $1.4 million. The film's global cume is now $17.4 million. The Big Short expands to Belgium, Switzerland, and the Middle East before 2016.
