GLOBAL REPORT: 'Deadpool' Nears Half a Billion Worldwide After 2 Weekends, 'The Mermaid' Enters Uncharted Waters in China

Deadpool scored an additional $85.3 million from 74 overseas markets this weekend, lifting the international cume to $256.3 million and the global total to a whopping $491.7 million. Marvel’s raunchiest superhero spread to 17 new markets this frame including South Korea ($12.1 million — the biggest 18+ rated opening ever), Spain ($4.1M), Italy ($3.3M), and the UAE ($1.7M — biggest R rated opening of all-time). Other top market cumes include the UK ($36.9M), Australia ($18.9M), Russia ($17.6M), France ($16.8M), Germany ($14.4M), Mexico ($13.4M), and Brazil ($12.5M). Japan will be the final territory to open on June 3.

Stephen Chow’s comedy The Mermaid dominated Asian box office charts again this weekend taking in $58.6 million included $55.8 million in China. The Mermaid has grossed $419.4 million in just two weeks of release in China and is now the highest grossing movie of all-time there. Other top territories for the wacky eco-friendly rom-com are Malaysia ($5.8M), Vietnam ($3.3M), and Singapore ($2.3M). 

Disney’s Zootopia found $31.2 million overseas this weekend after expanding into five major territories, pushing the international total to $39.0 million ahead of its US opening on March 4. France’s $9.2 million debut represents the biggest opening ever for a Disney animated film in the country, while Mexico’s #1 $4.5 million bow was 25% bigger than Frozen’s opening. Other top markets include Spain ($5.9M), Italy ($2.8M), and South Korea ($2.5M). Zootopia opens in Sweden, Portugal, Iceland, Norway, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, and Ecuador next weekend.

Alvin & The Chipmunks: The Road Chip picked up $11.7 million in 52 markets this weekend. The animated sequel has made $131.1 million overseas and $215.6 million worldwide. Norway opened with $0.8 million.

How To Be Single grossed an estimated $10.9 million in 50 overseas territories this weekend, bringing the international total to $24.1 million and the worldwide total to $55.9 million. The Warner Bros’ comedy debuted in the UK with $2.7 million, Australia with $2.3 million and Mexico with $0.57 million. Brazil opens next weekend.

The Revenant added $8.6 million this weekend thanks to strong holds from Spain ($1.6M/$11.0M cume), the UK ($1.0M/$30.9M cume), and Germany ($1.0M/$24.6 million cume). The Oscar nominated survival tale has earned $216.5 million at the international box office and $381.6 million worldwide. France and India open next weekend.

Kung Fu Panda 3 rolled to $7.2 million this frame, lifting the overseas total to $177.1 million and the worldwide cume to $294.1 million. Panda has released in just 7 international markets so far.

Hail, Caesar! opened in 27 overseas markets grossing an estimated $5.8 million this weekend. The Coen brothers comedy has earned $31.9 million worldwide. Openings include France ($2.1M), Germany ($1.0M), and Spain ($0.875M). Hail, Caesar! opens in Australia, Hungary, Portugal, and Slovenia next weekend.

The Danish Girl rolled into 7 new overseas markets this weekend for an estimated $3.4 million and $38.3 million total. Italy bowed with $1.1 million and South Korea opened with $344K. The Universal drama has earned $49.0 million worldwide. Next weekend sees openings in Trinidad, Hong Kong, and Venezuela.

Goosebumps earned $3.2 million this weekend in 16 overseas markets pushing the international total to $73.4 million and the worldwide gross to $153.5 million. The UK increased 26% thanks to school holidays bringing its cume to $11.0 million.

The Force Awakens pulled $2.6 million from 25 overseas territories in its tenth weekend of release. The record breaking film has earned $1.1182B overseas (#4 all-time) and $2.039843B worldwide (#3 all-time).

The Martian unearthed $2.5 million in 5 markets with the bulk of that coming from Japan where the sci-fi saga took the top spot for a third consecutive weekend. The international cume stands at $391.8 million and the worldwide tally is now $620.1 million.
