Twinkle might be a more appropriate title for this ensemble comedy that revolves around the lies and secrets of relationships and families. As always with Brit-flick rom coms, it boasts nuanced performances from a well-chosen cast, many of whom do make sparks fly on occasion. Otherwise it twinkles along conventionally without really breaking the mold.

Sam (played with much charm by Shaun Evans) lives in Liverpool in the north of England with his mum Jill (Lesley Manville). His dreams of moving to London take wing after a chance meeting with Vince (a warm-hearted Bob Hoskins).  Soon Sam has moved into Vince's spare flat in London—and his mum insists on coming as well.

Through his job as a waiter, he meets Sheila (the wonderful Stockard Channing, in fine form), who gives him a job at her PR company—but her interest in the lad goes beyond the professional. At this point the emotional complications in the screenplay by directors Tom Hunsinger and Neil Hunter (noted for The Lawless Heart ) begin to multiply and emerge from closets.

As a light-hearted comedy with finely drawn characterizations and delicate undertones, Sparkle does the business.
