“Off-beat,” “quirky,” “charming”—these are just some of the descriptions that float to the surface after watching enfant terrible Harmony Korine’s first film as a director since Julien Donkey-Boy in 1999. Definitely several shades lighter than most of his previous work, especially the nihilistic screenplay he provided for Larry Clark’s Kids, the Mister Lonely of the title is a Michael Jackson impersonator (Diego Luna) who meets up with a Marilyn Monroe impersonator (Samantha Morton) and finds fleeting happiness.
She invites him to a Scottish castle where a group of impersonators have established a commune for similar spirits. The narrative ranges from Paris to Scotland and Spain and also Panama, where Korine introduces us to a bunch of sky-diving nuns—don’t even ask why! Although patchy and uneven, Mister Lonely is not without its compensations and could acquire cult status.
