Among Giants

Whether climbing sheer cliffs or enormous transmission towers, the characters of this interesting English drama-directed by Sam Miller and written by Simon Beaufoy of "The Full Monty" fame-live in a state of high anxiety.
Ray ("In the Name of the Father's" Pete Postlethwaite) is the foreman for a freelance crew of men painting miles of steel pylons for off-the-books cash not always paid on time. With the unexpected hiring of Gerry ("Muriel's Wedding's" Rachel Griffiths), an athletic Australian vagabond, the dynamics change overnight for the all-male bastion. Twentysomething Steven (James Thornton) become jealous when Gerry lets her love light shine on the much older Ray, a guy troubled by the independent ways of contemporary women. The craggy Postle-thwaite playing a romantic lead is almost as surprising as the cowboy aesthetic of these working-class Brits who like to line dance and sing country tunes. Starring Pete Postlethwaite, Rachel Griffiths, James Thornton and Lennie James. Directed by Sam Miller. Written by Simon Beaufoy. Produced by Stephen Garrett. A Fox Searchlight release. Drama. Rated R for language and sexuality/nudity. Running time: 93 min.
