"Antz" is a wonderfully entertaining animated
comedy made in the spirit of some of Woody
Allen's early '70s comedies. And the subject of
this film is perfect for the kinds of neurotic
obsessions his best movies explored. The
story concerns an ant named Z (voiced by
Allen), a worker bug who has a hard time
playing the role of the conforming drone. One
night, at a bar, he meets Princess Bala
(Sharon Stone), and he falls in love with her,
even though she is engaged to a scheming
general (Gene Hackman) who is trying to
secretly "cleanse" the ant population. With the
help of his best friend, the soldier Weaver
(Sylvester Stallone), Z and the Princess lead
an ant revolution to create democracy in the
insect kingdom.
The the actors' voices fit very nicely with the ants they play, and the animation is highly imaginative with great depth-of-field shots and many memorable visuals. Featuring the voices of Woody Allen, Sharon Stone, Sylvester Stallone and Gene Hackman. Directed by Eric Darnell and Tim Johnson. Written by Todd Alcott and Chris & Paul Weitz. Produced by Brad Lewis, Aron Warner and Patty Wooton. A DreamWorks release. Animated comedy. Rated PG for mild language and menacing action. Running time: 77 min.
