Baise-moi

Just from its title alone, which translates to "rape me" or "f--- me," "Baise-Moi," which was labeled as pornographic in its native France, courts controversy.

"Baise-M oi" is in fact shot like a porno movie, with befitting music and camera angles, and is just as explicit. It also stars two adult film actresses as the leads. Yet this X-rated "Thelma and Louise" has something on its mind, or at least more than usual films of the genre.

Its directors are intent on a blanket indictment of a misogynistic French society. Their heroines lash out at--and kill--almost everyone whose paths they cross, something the film seems to endorse, in that the men and women who naturally fear these killers are caricatured and mocked. Crassly put together, "Baise-Moi" isn't as smart as it thinks it is. Starring Raffalea Anderson and Karen Bach. Directed and written by Virginie Despentes and Coralie Trinh Thi. Produced by Philippe Godeau. No distributor set. Drama. French-language, subtitled. Not yet rated. Running time: 76 min.
