Taking us right into the heart of it

Deliver Us From Evil

on October 13, 2006 by Kevin Courrier
In Deliver Us from Evil, former CBS and CNN producer Amy Berg delves with piercing intelligence into one of most shocking scandals that has rocked the Catholic Church in recent years. Father Oliver O'Grady was a serial pedophile who abused and raped children from dozens of California families over a period of 20 years. The victims ranged from a nine-month infant to the mother of another child.

Berg not only visits the families and their children to get the full story of the horrors that were inflicted, but she also talks to O'Grady, who is now living free in Ireland. Rather than simply building outrage in the viewer, Berg turns her eye to the bureaucracy of the Church, which culpably moved O'Grady from parish to parish in attempts to either protect their jobs or garner favor in the Church hierarchy. Her portrait of O'Grady itself is a chilling examination of a loquacious psychopath so disassociated from his feelings that he calmly talks of crimes that should give anyone else the cold creeps.
